Director of Sales, Sports & Events                         

Reports to: Executive Director

Job overview

Develops and implements sales strategies for the Minot Convention & Visitors Bureau to solicit but not limited to sporting events, conventions, meetings or events for the Minot community resulting in increased hotel occupancy and revenue. Works directly with hoteliers, sports authorities, convention planning services, and other city partners to secure events to Minot.

Duties and responsibilities

Financial Impact:

·         Develops a comprehensive sales plan aimed at maximizing the organization's effectiveness in sports, agriculture, conventions, and events for the city

·         Researches and works with the tournament committee, youth sports, hoteliers and other community organizations to attract or retain sales, sports, agriculture, and other potential events

·         Attends trade shows and events locally, and regionally to promote new business and increase sales opportunities and conducts follow up on leads

·         Prepares and presents bids to organizations to attract or retain events

·         Stays current in other markets who may vie for the same sports and events

·         Develops and delivers verbal and written presentations to clients and stakeholders

·         Maintains research on competition regarding their marketing and sales strategies

·         Develops appropriate sales tools and pertinent materials to attract organizations or events



·         Establishes and maintains positive relationships with clients through tradeshow participation, networking, direct mail, telephone or personal sales calls to promote Minot and develop awareness of our community

·         Educates, trains and motivates sales and marketing teams in hotels to improve revenue and achieve citywide revenue goals

·         Develops and maintains relationships with hotels, venues, local officials, clients, and organizations to produce and retain events and conferences

·         Collaborates with state officials and assists with the coordination of FAM Tours

·         Maintains active involvement in the community and enhances the visibility and positive participation of the CVB

·         Identify operational problems that reduce the effectiveness of activities and overall performance in the community and work with appropriate leaders on solutions

Accountability and requirements

·         Develops and implements comprehensive sales reports through written and oral communications

·         Prepares monthly and annual reports on sales plans, sales and activity tracking and performance results

·         Makes presentations to management and/or the board of directors as requested

·         Abilities to communicate in a clear, concise manner

·         Prioritizes activities within specific time guidelines and handles multiple responsibilities

·         Participates in annual budget input process and daily management of sales budget

·         Travels as required

·         Performs other duties as assigned



The Director of Sales looks for ways to increase revenue and sales for the city by securing events to the community. The ideal candidate would hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher education qualification equivalent in sales, marketing or related field OR a minimum of three years equivalent directly related experience in a hospitality setting. Requires strong knowledge of local businesses and business trend and results-oriented individual. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to promote the community and achieve goals.
