9 Fishing Spots near Minot

Are you eager to drop a line? You won’t need to go far! Within the city and surrounding area lies an abundance of rivers and lakes open to fishing. These spots are both convenient and bountiful for fishermen of any age!

 

In Town

 

Minot Parks ~ 2 fishing piers are currently open at Roosevelt Park!
1. The north side near the skate park
2. The backside of the East loop

State Fair Grounds ~ Outside of the events at the fairgrounds, there are also outdoor opportunities like fishing. The pond on the north end of the grounds is occasionally stocked with pan fish and trout. Grab your fishing poles and see what you can catch!

Souris River ~ The river flowing through the city is known interchangeably as the Souris or Mouse River. The shoreline features several locations where an angler can drop a line. Catch perch, pike, and walleye all within the city of Minot.

 

 

A Quick Trip

 

Rice Lake | 20 Minutes from Minot

Rice Lake is located inside Ward County and contains large Northern Pike. The northern point of the lake is home to the boat launch. With such a quick drive you’ll have plenty of time for swimming at the public beach. If you choose to make it a full trip, there is primitive camping available.

 

Upper Souris Wildlife Refuge | 30 Minutes from Minot

On the Upper Souris Refuge, you’ll find Lake Darling, a year-round hub for outdoor activities. Many people choose to fish along the shoreline just south of Grano Crossing, which is also a great place to launch a kayak. There are fishing docks on the refuge and picnic tables for visitors! Our tip – remember your bug and tick spray!

 

 

Carlson Lake | 40 Minutes from Minot

North – Anglers can reel in Northern Pike and small Perch while fishing at North Carlson. With a max depth of less than 25 feet, this round lake is equipped with a boat launch on the southeast side.
South – Blue Gill numbers are increasing inside the South Carlson Lake and the Northern Pikes are smaller in this part of the lake. The boat launch and fishing pier are both located at the northern tip of the lake.

 

Day Trip

 

Lake Audubon | 1 Hour from Minot 

Formed by the creation of the Garrison Dam, Lake Audubon neighbors Lake Sakakawea. There are various boat ramps to use, depending on which direction you are coming in from. This body of water is deepest near Totten Trail which is close to the only campground on the Refuge. The lake is also situated on the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge so watch for boundaries as to where boats may be restricted. While fishing for walleye, anglers may also reel in some smallmouth bass, or pike, too.

 

 

Lake Sakakawea | 1 Hour from Minot

Just across US Highway 83 is another chance to catch your limit. Lake Sakakawea has more shoreline than the California Pacific Coast! These far-reaching shorelines are a premier place to drop a line. On the south shore visitors can access Lake Sakakawea State Park to enjoy other recreation including hiking and wildlife viewing.

 

Lake Metigoshe Area | 1 Hour 30 Minutes from Minot 

On the United States and Canadian border, Lake Metigoshe is tucked into the Turtle Mountains. The lake features four fishing docks and boat ramps around the lake to accommodate every angler. Try your luck at hooking one of the several species of fish including Blue Gill, crappie, pike, and walleye.
