History of Minot

History of Minot

Minot was founded in 1886 during construction of the Great Northern Railway and named after railroad executive Henry Davis Minot. When the railroad paused for winter, a tent town quickly formed, and the population surged to nearly 5,000 in just five months, earning Minot its nickname, the “Magic City.”

The town was established on land homesteaded by Erik Ramstad, who later became one of Minot’s early civic leaders. In the 1920s, Minot gained national attention during Prohibition as “Little Chicago,” known as a bootlegging hub between Canada and the United States.
