‘Preserving History,’ an exhibition of mixed-media collages by Savannah, Georgia artist Jamie Azevedo, is on display in the Northwest Arts Center’s Walter Piehl Gallery from February 28 to March 27.

As a history student, Azevedo loved hearing stories about the founding fathers of the United States, or the enlightened thinkers of 18th century France. She states, “it was exciting to learn about the accomplishments of so many global heroes, but I discovered few heroines. Where were the stories of women throughout the ages?”

To help bring parity, ’Preserving History’ is an excavation of the lives, achievements, and even atrocities of women throughout time. Azevedo hopes the exhibit will leave viewers wanting to discover more about the women in the works, and a desire to unearth the untold stories of the countless other neglected figures of the past.

The Walter Piehl Gallery is located in the Northwest Arts Center on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. It is open MTWF, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 1-5 p.m. and by special arrangement. It is closed holidays. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.

This project is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
