24 Jul Roller Derby Returns to Minot
Kyra-pocalypse, T-Rex and Smashley are just a few of the roller derby stars performing this Saturday night for the Nodak Knockouts. If you haven’t heard of the Nodak Knockouts, you may just want to clear your calendar for this Saturday (July 27th, 2013) at 7pm! The Minot, ND based roller derby team is returning to their home turf for a matchup against the Ring Leader Roller Girls from Whitewood, Saskatchewan at the Maysa Arena (2501 W Burdick Exp Minot, ND).
Not sure exactly how a roller derby works? Basically, it’s a contact sport played by two teams each consisting of five players who roller skate counterclockwise around a track. The bout (game) consist of a series of short “jams” in which both teams designate a player to score (the “jammer”) who must lap the members of the opposing team to score. The other teammates attempt to assist their “jammer” by simultaneously playing offense and defense to block the opposing jammer. Still confused? You’ve got the see the action live! The bout will be about an hour long with two 20 minute halves and a halftime that offers a chance to win some money with a 50/50 raffle.
The NoDak Knockouts started out about three years ago and the team consists of a very eclectic group of ladies from the community who love the camaraderie of the sport. It’s not all face paint and hard knocks, the team looks for opportunities to give back to the community by always donating a portion of their proceeds to a local organization (by grant). This time, they will be donating 10% of ticket sales to the YWCA and a portion of the 50/50 raffle sales to a friend of theirs who recently lost her husband.
Make sure to RSVP on the Nodak Knockout’s Facebook page. Tickets are available in advance for a reduced price of $10 at www.mouseriverrollers.com or at the door for $12. Doors open at 6pm so get there early and wear your fiercest purple in support of the NoDak Knockouts!
